Missing my tail but still goin'

I'm looking to retire from my free-roaming, feral life.  I love lots of attention, especially a a good scratch behind the ears or under the chin.  I do okay by myself, but I'd rather have human companionship.  I have short, white fur with gray tabby patches and I'm missing most of my tail (it's only about 3-inches long now).  I am FIV+ and was pretty sick for awhile, but the vet says I'm doing great now and I'm eating up the attention (hee! hee!) I do okay with other cats but I'd rather be just me or with only one other buddy.  I've had a rough life so far.  I'm looking forward to a better one.  Wanna bud?!  I'm your man!

Colony Caregiver Note:  The first time we saw Stumpy at the feeders was in May 2009.  He really looked worse for the wear, with several injuries and his tail almost gone.  We don't know if he lost his tail to frostbite or injury.  What little tail he has left has very little-to-no fur on it.  He is very skittish and will only let us watch him eat if we stay inside the door and don't speak.  If we speak, he runs to the edge of the sidewalk about 30-ft. away and watches.  If all is quiet, he'll come back up and eat.  He doesn't seem to mind if Mama Kitty is on the porch and will often share the dish with her, but will not share with other males, choosing to run or fight.  We'd like to get him vetted thru the TNR program but must get him caught first.  (So far he's avoided the traps.)  This would surely mellow him and lessen his constant injuries from fighting and lessen his chances of contracting or spreading disease.

UPDATE:  Stumpy is now letting us pet him while he eats and begs at the door (like Mama Kitty) if we're late with the food or he thinks he needs more.  He still won't come near us if he's not on the porch eating, but it's real progress!

UPDATE (5-12-2012):  We caught Stumpy on the 8th and he's been vetted!  He was limping badly on his front leg and we were concerned he'd been injured.  Turns out he had an infected absess on his right paw which was cleaned and treated by the vet during surgery.  He has now been neutered, fully vaccinated, treated for worms & earmites, cleaned up, and tested.  He tested positive for FIV so he won't be released outdoors but he's acting more like an indoor cat now, so we think he'll do okay.  (Mama was retested and she's still negative, whew!)

UPDATE (6-1-12): Stumpy has become a bit of a lover.  Begs for attention and will now lay in my lap for cuddles.  He isn't sure about belly rubs yet, but revels in the rest.  He likes the vertical scratching post and I've caught him playing with the balls & bells.  He kennels on his own and crates for transport with very little fuss.  Still treating his ears for possible infection and he's being dewormed again.  Had to crush the pill in some canned food, since he doesn't like his head held but he ate it up!

UPDATE (6-12-12):  Stumpy was taken to the vet this morning after we noticed he was bleeding from the gums.  We thought he had an injured tooth or needed a cleaning.  Turns out he is severely anemic with very few platelets.  Vet says he's so anemic he could "crash at anytime".  He may need a transfusion.  He is being hospitalized until we can get him what he needs. Vet says if he doesn't improve tonight he may need a transfusion & they'll need to run more tests to determine the proper course of treatment.  He is currently hospitalized at Advanced Pet Care Clinic in Cedar Falls, IA.

We are desperately trying to raise the funds (about $500 needed).  You can donate via PayPal link on the left of our website just put "Stumpy" in the notes box on your donation and we'll make sure it goes to him. If you can't donate $ at this time maybe you can help in other ways (collect Milk Moola caps, Kwik Star donut price ovals, used printer cartridges, old cell phones, etc. that we can submit for funds through our other fundraising programs).  Thank you!

STUMPY'S ADOPTION AVAILABILITY IS BEING PUT ON HOLD UNTIL HE IS HEALTHY AGAIN!  IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ADOPTING HIM, PLEASE CONTACT US FOR AN UPDATE ON HIS HEALTH BEFORE SUBMITTING AN APPLICATION.  Thank you for understanding.
